    That’s not a break, that’s a sabbatical.

That damn Holmes on Homes sucks me in too.

I’m looking for a way to get ahead of the game so that I’m offering more with this comic than I am. Maybe “seasons” and “sabbaticals” aren’t the best route, but it’s the best solution I’ve come up with so far!

  2. Spencey

Obviously I’m sad that I won’t get my HSII fix this summer, but I do know that sometimes a break can help you to move forward creatively, at least that’s what I found when I took a three month break from Dr Sheep and the Aardvark.

I would strongly recommend you encourage your readers to sign up to your RSS feed, so that when you do return, your readership will be waiting for you.

According to traffic stats, a massive chunk of readers use the RSS feed already, so any activity I do offer over the summer months leading up to the “new season”, I think will get noticed, hopefully!

Uh-oh…. that’s what they ALL say.

    “I’ll be back…”

    “A hiatus, not the end…”

    “Just taking a break…”

    :(

Well, keep your panties from bunching up. I may end up scaling down the length of the break from 12 weeks to 5.

You could always throw a few comics my way, no?!? *smirk*
Couldn’t you could use a creative outlet ?!?

        A challenge!

I challenge you to fill the empty space with a few of your own, so yes, challenge ON! But will you? *grin*

(plus, I wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t 110% sure this break is a simple break. My word is my bond, I’m not leaving the comics scene, I just have tons of ideas and concepts I need to organize!)

  4. Mark Ricketts

I’m gonna miss the strip, but I think it’s a good idea to take time off every once and a while. You gotta step back sometimes. Heck, you’ve inspired me. I’m gonna take a break too!!

      jynksie

wait—what?!? If you go on a break, what ever will I have left to read? o.O

  5. DadaHyena

Everyone’s leaving? Awww…looks like I’m going to have the whole web to myself.

Enjoy your summer break! Come back soon with lots of hilarious/embarrassing stories!

Think of my break as something that couldn’t be controlled because I didn’t have my papers while visiting Arizona! o.O yeah, go with that! *smirk*

      • JerryBenedict

Looks like you’re spending your summer in Mexico City whether you like it or not!

  6. George

It’s like everyone’s taking the summer off. I’m not gonna have anything to left to read. :)
I understand where you’re coming from, Jynksie. After so long of keeping a stringent schedule, you find yourself almost chasing your tail trying to keep it going. All that matters is if you can get the next strip finished. It’s like you’re not even concentrating on the fun aspect of it; it’s work now.

If you need some time away in order to make comicking fun for you again, I totally understand. I will miss you, Hodge, and the rest of the gang, and it will be lonely around here since a LOT of folks are going on hiatus right now, but you must take care of yourself first.

See ya when you return, my friend! :)

Summers for webcomics are a slow period anyways. If you watch your stats, they will drop between June and August. I think the growing mentality out there among many web-tooners, is why burn out and fall behind when you can simply alter your production schedule?

If you end up in that top tier of comics that make serious money, then naturally, taking breaks is not so much an option. For those of us who are hobbiest, or are new and learning, taking breaks to better yourself, in the long run, only helps you better your craft! We don’t have to run our comics like newsprint dailies, we can set whatever kind of schedules we want for our comics as long as our readers know how we intend to produce our work!

I can’t stress enough that my summer sabbatical is merely a chance for me to look at what I’ve accomplished to date and to plan ahead for better things to come. I can’t leave these characters, regardless of whether they make it big or remain where they are now, doing HSII is my outlet for personal enjoyment!

  7. Siabur

I may be forced into a break myself depending on family situations. Like dumbass kid moving into my Lego room leaving me with no place to build or store stuff.

Good luck taking the time off. I haven’t seen Holmes build any draw bridges yet, but keep your fingers crossed.

    • jynksie
      jynksie

Won’t be needing that drawbridge. We are putting in a dry river bed down the side of the yard that leads to a dry well! Can’t have the pool floating away once it goes in! o.O

Jynksie: I get your RSS feed so I’ll be ready to dive back in when the strips start showing up again! Summers are hardest for me too (kids are home from school!) so I usually take a break from my favorite places. I’m going to try to push through with the strip, though. I know EXACTLY what you’re saying about the strip being a joyful creative outlet. I feel it too.

Even if I got frustrated with the current format, I’d not stop making a comic. I’d simply tweak it, maybe rename it and bring the cast on over with current personalities in tact. Think of how many Flinstones variations there have been!! The bottom line in all this is, I’m not going away, I’m just changing how I produce and display content! HSII is still in it’s infancy, I haven’t even scratched the surface of it’s potential! =)

  9. JerryBenedict

I’ll miss my HSII, but I totally get the summer break. We forty-something webcomickers tend to have busier schedules then our twenty-something counterparts! I guess it’s easier to be sequestered inside doing a comic strip during the winter in New Hampshire (Live, Freeze, or Die!) then it would be when the summer comes along. My wife and I vacation up there now and then at Portsmouth and the Isles of Shoals… we love it up there this time of year.

      jynksie

My wife and I would be living in Portsmouth/Hampton if it weren’t for the commute to Boston! So we settled for at least being on the NH side of Taxachusetts in the “other” Salem, about 25 minutes SW of Portsmouth! Summertime in New England, there is no better place! =)

  10. Jande (eccentricOrbits)

Jynksie! Good for you! You know what you need and you are going for it. Your readership can only benefit from that.
I need to do something similar with my own “comic”. I think that I will take part of June to write scripts for it, and plan out sequences properly. Right now its all “snapshots”.
Anyway, hope you have a great creative joyful summer. Hope to see you on Twitter sometimes.

    • jynksie
      jynksie

Thanks Jande!! I’ll still be active on this site and on twitter over the summer. I’ll be redeveloping the website, adding new content pages, doing some blogs on the cast and creation of HSII! Things I’ve been wanting to update and develop. I’ll also be throwing in some random comics here and there, but no set schedule until Sept! =)
