HAH! Actually, I had the comic named and finished last Thursday evening. So when I saw your tweet, I burst out laughing! …as for Hodge working for “someone”, that “someone” has to own the newspaper Hodge works for. I needed an antagonist for this storyline, hence the publisher of “The Daily Granite” that Hodge is managing editor of.
There are those who would feel that society would fall apart, and straight marriages would magically be destroyed by allowing gay marriage. Horrors!
The 50% divorce rate may go up! Personally, I’m straight, and I dont feel threatened by gay marriage.
I imagine that Mr. Bigotto must live in one of the more conservative rural parts of NH… probably somewhere in the styx.
In the comic blog, if you click on the words “how it will play out”, you’ll see its almost a “ripped from the headlines” story. New Hampshire’s largest paper, the Union Leader has actually refused to print any nuptial announcements unless they are from straight couples. It’s the only paper in the state w/ this policy. While the Union Leader is widely respected for it’s fiscal conservatism and taking a stand on spending, it has lost touch with its readers on a majority of social issues, much to their eventual undoing.
The problem with marriage in my view is a problem of the separation of Church and State. Since marriage is both a religious and a civil ceremony, both the constitution and religious law claim ownership of it and hence the conflict. One solution is to separate the religious and civil elements altogether, have the State rename marriage licenses to “common property partnerships”, “Domestic association” or whatever they choose to call it. This institution shall be equally accessible to any two consenting adults without regard to gender and no religionist should be able to contest it. Churches can then claim the “marriage” name for their religious ceremonies and apply it in a manner of their preference wihtout interference from the state. Churches can and will choose who to marry and who not to marry and not enter in conflcit with the laws of the land. Then we will all be a big gay – I mean, happy family…
Your opinion and mine pretty much mirror one another. When my wife and I married, it was a “civil ceremony”(I consider our “marriage” and so does she, a “civil union” not a religious one. Marriage is just a word that describes the fact you have merged your assets and income into a legal and binding agreement). We had someone from the town we married in officiate at the resort/function facility and there was no religious anything to it, in fact my wife dismissed the use of her fathers family priest when he insulted the fact I wasn’t catholic. So discrimination from religion hits us all in different ways, which is why I no longer tolerate “organized religion”. However, with that said, there are many denominations of christian faith that would bless a gay marriage and for those, I applaud. There are also many christian denominations that allow you tend their church and be a part of their community even if you are not of that denominational faith and for those, I again applaud and have happily sat in.
I’ve said it once, I’ll say it til the cows come home. “All who wish to suffer the bonds of matrimony should have equal access to it, until DEATH do they part it!” o.O
Well done on this one, Scott! It has always surprised me that there are people who would refuse a couple who love and respect one another the same rights as any other couple simply because they are the same sex.
I’ve known same sex couples who are so sweet and loving to one another it would melt your heart to witness it. I’ve also witnessed the other kind of “married” couple that can’t seem to say a word to each other without sarcasm or putdowns. The latter type of relationship also abounds in hetero “marriages”. People are people. Love is about how you treat another human being. “Love one another” says the churches “but only the opposite gender.” I’m not sure that was supposed to be the message.”
I like Midtoon’s suggestion. That is already somewhat in place. When you married by a preacher, you still have to sign that civil contract. Why not just take that a step farther?
When I started penciling out this story last year, it stemmed from two friends of my wife and I who where from NY, but had to come out here to NH to get married because NY doesn’t allow same sex marriage. The issue I had in creating the story back then is that I had no real antagonist to give the story some teeth.
Then October of last year rolled around and I was alerted to the fact that my states most prominent conservative newspaper was against a basic civil right of equality. Hence, I found my missing link in a behavior that fries my fanny! This newspaper is out of touch with mainstream New Hampshire and is really an embarrasment to our “live and let live” way of life.
Thats my long winded version of agreeing with you 110%!
Thanks Colleen! That rollover character was from a halloween story I did back in 09 “Rocky Horror”. It was such a hit, I made it the rollover image and haven’t changed it since! =)
Suit of armor, naw! Madbury wears a necktie when he fights the Old Guard! Interesting strip, looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Yep, nothing says “warrior” like a purple and yellow polka dotted tie! *grin*
Arigato Mr Tweet stealer..haha. NOW I know what you were hiding. I never realized Hodge actually “worked” for someone.

I like how you’re expanding the Madbury “Universe”. I see a toy line developing.
A toy line?!? o.O I added talking hands and an office setting! *grin*
Domo arigato, Mr. Bigotto!
…really, I’m the first one to make that comment? Weird.
LOL! There’s also some rhyming in that last panel as well! Someone caught on, this pleases me! *grin*

That comment must’ve taken you hours to prepare-eh?!? *smart arsed grin*

That’s just the kind of long-winded reply I like to get to comments I make –especially when you’re agreeing with me. ;`D
Seriously though, I’m glad you didn’t force it. This turned out well, and the subject is always timely.
BTW, NY state doesn’t recognise hetro- common-law marriages either as far as I know, silly bastages. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
This story line looks promising. And love your roll-over dude! I gotta make me a better one!

love your storyline so far! will keep following!
Thank you Jenn! I’m glad your enjoying your read here! Welcome to MADBURY!
